LANCASTER CANAL, LANCASTER, LANCASHIRE

This attractive canal is popular for a good reason, with a great head of silverfish and excellent pike sport. What’s been out?

Some good catches of roach alongside the occasional net of skimmers are coming out. As always, pike are showing too.

LINDHOLME LAKES, DONCASTER, SOUTH YORKS

You’ll never be short of lakes to choose at Lindholme, where a range of tactics will catch everything from big perch to carp.

What’s been out?

Recent matches have been won with good bags of F1s and carp, and Loco and Benny’s are in good form too. Tactics to use:

A Hybrid feeder with a wafter hookbait will always buy a few bites. On Benny’s you can also catch using pellets on the pole.

MIDLANDS RIVER SEVERN, SHREWSBURY, SHROPSHIRE

There’s nothing better than a big bag of river silverfish, and on the Quarry Park stretch controlled by Shrewsbury Town Fisheries, you can catch just that.

What’s been out?

Good catches of dace with the odd perch and roach have been taken regularly, and a double-figure bag is on the cards. There are also some barbel and chub in this stretch.

Tactics to use:

SPRING GRANGE FSISHERIES, BEEBY, LEICESTER

If you’re looking for a tranquil venue this weekend, why not pay Spring Grange Fisheries a visit for its carp and silverfish?

What’s been out?

Good catches of quality roach and the odd carp have been taken from the first lake you come to as you enter the fishery.

Tactics to use:

The first lake is quite deep.

Fish the pole around

11m out with maggot or caster over groundbait. Chucking a small Hybrid feeder with a wafter to the middle of the pool will catch carp.

SPRINGVALE FISHING LAKES, NEWARK, NOTTINGHAM

Famed for its big ide, Springvale Fishing Lakes is the perfect place to visit for a few bites in the winter. Good carp are also being caught. What’s been out?

Recent matches on the First Spring Lake have seen near-50lb bags of quality carp. Many of these carp also boast attractive scale patterns. A 20lb bag of ide is a realistic target on Newcastle Lake.

Tactics to use:

For the silverfish keep things simple and fish maggot on the pole, feeding with a Kinder pot. If you fancy a carp, chuck a Method feeder

SOUTH

There are three fish-filled lakes to try. Everything from good roach to F1s can be had.

What’s been out?

On Lakes 2 and 3 F1s and skimmers have been caught on both feeder and pole. There are also some big carp to be had from the many snags, such as reed beds and overhangin­g trees, at the fishery.

Tactics to use:

Maggot and groundbait are the winning baits for F1s and skimmers, and regularly feeding small amounts and fishing maggot over the top should result in regular bites. Contact: 07976 967976

BRISTOL AVON, CHIPPENHAM, WILTSHIRE

The winding Bristol Avon is one of the most productive rivers in the South, where you can catch a good bag of small or big fish.

What’s been out?

Nets of roach have been coming out, with the occasional skimmer and perch mixed in. Good chub and bream are also being caught. Tactics to use:

The stick float is a great way to catch the roach, but for bigger fish try the feeder. Maggots score well on both.
