NIGHT FISHING ESSENTIALS
HEADTORCH You obviously need light to be able to see in the dark. Make sure you pack a reliable headtorch. If it’s battery-operated, bring spares with you, as there is nothing more annoying than a dead light midway through netting a potential PB! There are plenty of good USB headtorches on the market these days that may just be worth that investment if nights will be a regular thing for you going forward.
SHELTER
To fish nights at this time of year, you’re going to need a reliable waterproof and insulated bivvy/ brolly. Cheaper isn’t always better in this department, because you’ll certainly notice the difference in quality. The temperature will plummet at this time of year, so having an extra skin on your bivvy and a groundsheet to stop moisture is vital in keeping warm.
SLEEPING BAG/BEDCHAIR
Comfort is important to get you into the swing of night fishing, so get yourself a quality bedchair and sleep system. Cold air can often come through the bottom of bedchairs, so getting a bedchair cover is a good counter-measure and will help you get that bit more snug while waiting for the alarm to melt off.
EXTRA CLOTHES
The days may be getting warmer, but the nights are still very cold. Make sure you pack extra layers for when those temperatures start falling. Only put them on when needed, though, and you will appreciate them more. Put them on too early and you will sweat – which is totally counterproductive.
CHARGERS
Staying connected with phones can be really useful. Keep your appliances charged on the bank with a battery pack. You’re more likely to go home early if your phone goes dead and nothing else is happening.
