THERE are days on the bank when you have to wonder why we anglers love to make things so complicated. There are different routes to success, for sure, but so often we take a car repair manual where a two-page leaflet would have done the job.

My recent summer carping has been a classic example of this. Give me a rare whole day session or overnighter and I’ll anxiously pack as if I’m going on holiday. As soon as those dreaded words ‘just in case’ come to mind, you can feel a bit naked without multiple rods and rig options. But is all that gear any guarantee of success? In my case, no.

Fast forward a week or three and I had the opposite level of prep for my next trip. An Avon rod had been hastily thrown in the car, along with a bag of dog biscuits. This was no meticulous planning, but more a nagging hunch that with hot conditions forecast, the carp might be uncatchable on the bottom.

Truth be told, I’d been booked for a coaching session that had switched from morning to afternoon at short notice. And so, with a bit of time to kill, I had a free shot at some opportunist sport. The best time to fish, as they say, is whenever the heck you get a chance!

From the off, things looked good, with some nice basking fish in view. And how liberating it is to go carp fishing without taking the kitchen sink! One rod and a few bits don’t give you endless options, but on so many smaller fisheries the last thing you need is an A to Z of methods clogging up your car boot.

For the next two or three hours, I remembered how much I missed floater fishing. Getting the carp going is more like a match angling approach than specimen fishing. It’s not only exciting, but the guesswork is gone because you can see exactly what’s going on.

Could it be this is the real reason some of the dyed in the wool boilie brigade don’t like it? Just imagine if you could see how many times the carp inspected or outright refused the baits you left on the bottom!

As is so often the case, the trick was simply to feed for a good half-an-hour before even thinking about casting out. Even then, it was tantalising stuff, with as many gasps and sighs as watching an England match.

I needn’t have worried in the end, because as soon as the fish began to compete for bait, the bites came.

By lunchtime, I’d managed some proper arm ache with fish to mid doubles, thanks to nothing more complicated than an Avon rod and some dog biscuits. A healthy reminder that this sport of ours can be way simpler than we often make it.
