River Severn, Bridgnorth (60 pegs)

THIS new river event kicked off with a full house on the Severn and it saw glory for Steve Maher, who booked his place in the grand final after weighing in 64-2-0 of barbel and chub.

Second place went to Richard Buxton on 51-8-0, third spot being filled by Jim Burton with 49-0-0. Joining them in the final

as fellow section winners were Matt Derry, Darren Frost and Martin Challenger.

Drawing peg 4 in A section, a good swim, Steve set up feeder and waggler rods with barbel the main target. Chub acted as a back-up, as was the case in the RiverFest match he won at Bewdley last week.

After an hour, the waggler and hemp and caster feeder had produced just a few small chub, but little else.

“I was going nowhere really, so I dropped back on to the hemp and caster blockend feeder, thinking that I had to catch big fish to stand any chance of winning the section, and with about two hours to go I finally caught a barbel,” Steve said.

“I was hoping for more, but often on the Severn this doesn’t happen. It must have been my lucky day, because the next nine casts to the same spot all produced a barbel and I went from nothing to around 50lb in no time!

“Two more fish in the last 15 minutes sealed the deal.”

RESULT: 1 S Maher, Steve Maher Angling/ABC Baits, 64-2-0; 2 R Buxton, Mosella, 51-8-0;

3 J Burton, Cadence, 49-0-0.

QUALIFIERS: S Maher, J Burton, M Derry, R Buxton, D Frost & M Challenger.
