What’s the best way to store worms to make them last longer?

- Paul Garner

Peter King, London

A Both dendrobaenas and lobworms can be kept fresh for weeks, if not months, provided you follow a few basic guidelines. First, change the medium they’re stored in regularly. One of the best ways to do this is to add some fresh damp sphagnum moss, which can be found on most garden lawns, every week. This provides them with food and toughens their skins slightly too, adding to their longevity.

Second, make sure no maggots ever get inside the same container, as the ammonia they give off will kill worms.

Finally, remove any dead or dying worms as soon as you spot them.
