An Italian journey
The blockbuster of the year arrives in Florence, and we’ve picked out five more shows around the world that trace the story of Italian art
Donatello: The Renaissance
Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence
19 March–31 July www.palazzostrozzi.org
With some sculptures, arriving in Florence from more than museums across the world and including many that have never been lent before, this is an unprecedented – and probably never to be repeated – exploration of the Renaissance master. Alongside his own masterpieces in marble and bronze are works by contemporaries and disciples, ranging from Brunelleschi to Caravaggio.
Praised as Raphael’s heir, Parmigianino
( – ) was a virtuoso draughtsman; a show at the Courtauld in London celebrates his tireless experimentation ( March– June).
At the Prado, all of the surviving fragments of Annibale Carracci’s
( – ) masterful late frescoes for the Herrera Chapel in Rome have been reunited ( March– June).
The Petit Palais in Paris looks at the career of Giovanni Boldini
( – ) – the Italian ‘Master of Swish’ who captured Parisian high society with inimitable brio ( March– July).
Arte Povera pioneer Giuseppe Penone
(b. ) has teamed up with Sèvres to create his first works in porcelain, on show at the Frick in New York from March– August.
A survey at the Pompidou pays homage to Penone’s fellow Piedmontese Giorgio Griffa (b. ), with rhythmic abstractions spanning the s and the present ( March– June).
