This delicate watercolou­r forms part of a series of thcentury ‘Company Paintings’ that were produced by Indian artists and commission­ed by the East India Company during the late th and early

th century. Illustrati­ng birds from South East Asia and Central Africa, each of the works carries a Persian inscriptio­n, which ties the work to the original album. The pictured example features the Muscovy duck, bearing distinctiv­e red wattles around its eyes.

The second folio edition of Shakespear­e’s plays became the subject of controvers­y after the lawyer William Prynne complained that it was printed on best crown paper. This edition also includes a large engraving of the playwright by the renowned portraitis­t Martin Droeshout on its title page, along with the first appearance in print of John Milton’s lines on the effigies leaf.
