Tarbert gets ready to host premier Scottish Series

-

THE Scottish Series, Scotland’s premier sailing event, is about to get under way in Tarbert – and the crews are ready to race.

Over the weekend of May 27-30, there will be a variety of races to suit different yachts and sailing enthusiasts.

Ashore, there is always plenty of entertainment but on in the village for racers and spectators alike.

For the cruisers, a party at Largs last night (Thursday) will be followed by a white sail race to Tarbert today.

Saturday is the big race day, so look out for some big names, including, in IRC class one, Steve Cowie and Ian Marshall on GP42 Zephyr. In the same class, sponsors Silvers Marine will be there with Jamie McGarry and Colin Moore on their Swan 45, Eala of Rhu. Vying for top spot aboard their Corby 37.2 yacht Aurora will be Rod Stuart and William Ram.

In IRC class two, last year’s Scottish Series winners return to defend their crown. Fool’s Gold, all the way from Waterford in Ireland, took the 2015 title for the best overall performance. It won’t be easy, though, and competition will be fierce. Tarbert’s own Ian McNair, sailing First by Farr, will compete in CYCA class five, while Arnold Clark’s eye-catching Drum can be seen among the CYCA class eight contenders.

There is plenty for spectators to enjoy. A marquee will be at the harbour offering a range of musical treats with Scott MacDonald and Mid Argyll Pipe Band being kept busy over the weekend. On Saturday night there will be a spectacular fireworks display from Tarbert Castle, plus the Big Band bash as everyone enjoys the ambiance of the pubs and hotels in Tarbert for a great fun weekend.
