Cows and heifers fly at Stirling sale

CALEDONIAN Marts Ltd sold 168 breeding cattle at its show and sale on Monday May 23.

An excellent show of heifers with calves at foot met a flying trade and many more could have been sold. Bulling heifers were probably the best show for quality to be seen at this centre and were easily sold.

In the bull section, a mixed show on offer were hard to cash.

The breeding females were judged by Brian Harper, Greenwells, Falkirk and the following were his awards:

Champion heifer with calf - a Limousin cross British Blue from John McAlister, West Thomaston, Banknock, sold at £5,000 to Brian Harper.

Reserve champion again a Limousin cross British Blue, this time from Craig Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden, realised £4,600.

Champion pen of bulling heifers were Limousin crosses from A Kennedy & Sons, Seggarsdea­n, Haddington, and made £1,450 to A Galbraith, Upper Kinneil, Linlithgow.

The bulls in the show were judged by Ian Cullens, Dollarbank, Dollar. Bulls sold to £4,000 for a Limousin from R McCulloch, South Mid Frew, Thornhill, purchased by J Caskie, Kenaghair, Isle of Mull.

Other leading prices: Heifers with calves at foot: £3,400, £3,200 and £3,000 West Thomaston; £3,200 (twice), £3,000 and £2,600 Pitcairn; £2,800 (three times) West Thomaston; £2,150 Lower Killearnie; £2,100 Langshaw; £1,900 Parkhouse and Lower Greenyards.

Cows with calves at foot: £1,900 Lower Killearnie; £1800 Lower Greenyards and Langshaw; £1,650 Kirklane and Over Hillhouse.

Limousin bulling heifers: £1,650 and £1,400 Seggarsdea­n; £1,600 and £1,120 Lower Greenyards; £1,450 and £1,300 Parkhouse; £1,400 and £1,280 OverHillho­use; £1,100 Balgownie Mains and Ashmore Farms.

Bulls: Limousin x British Blue: £2,000 Laigh Borland

Simmental:£1,950 Wester Dullatur

Limousin: £1,700 Lower Killearnie; £1,650 Cairnbog

Aberdeen Angus: £1,550 Mains of Boquhan.
