Argyll athletes take on the nation

YOUNG athletes from Mid Argyll travelled to Glasgow to compete against more than 100 other teams from all over Scotland in a national competitio­n at the Emirates Arena.

Mid Argyll Athletics Club entered two girls teams and one boys team in the National Under 12s Superteams competitio­n on Sunday January 5.

The boys team - Murray MacDonald from Lochgilphe­ad, Callum Green from Ardrishaig, Keiran Blair from Tarbert and Roan McVicar from Tighnabrua­ich - finished 29th overall out of 51 teams. Murray was the top Mid Argyll athlete with an individual points score of 50, which was only surpassed by another three boys out of a total of 204 boys.

Murray ran the 60 metres in 9.5 seconds, then recorded 3.71 metres in the long jump and rounded off an outstandin­g performanc­e with 6.38 metres in the shot putt.

Impressed

Keiran impressed with 60 metres in 10.1 and Roan was only a fraction slower in 10.2 seconds.

The girls teams fin- ished equal on points which was unexpected but well done to the younger B team, led by Eleanor Dale from Ardrishaig who impressed in the long jump clearing 3.02 metres.

The other team members were Beth Johnstone from Tarbert, Sara Bakali of Inveraray and Ruby Dunlop from Ardrishaig.

Rose MacCallum from Kilmartin was the top athlete in the A team with 10.4 in the 60 metres, 3 metres in the long jump and an impressive 5.01 metres in the shot putt.

The other girls in the A team were Holly Gilthorpe from Lochgilphe­ad, Erin Naisby from Inveraray and Maisie Gilmour from Ardrishaig.

The boys contest was won by Harmeny AC from Edinburgh and the girls contest by Inverness Harriers.

Bill McCallum, of Mid Argyll Athletics Club, commented: ‘This national competitio­n was a great experience, not just for the young athletes competing in the big arena, but also for the parents who provided transport on the day.’
