Pupils quiz employers at jobs fair
EMPLOYABILITY, education and their future were on the minds of Lochgilphead Joint Campus pupils as they attended a jam-packed career fair.
The busy event gave pupils from primary seven through to S6 the opportunity to explore potential career pathways and training schemes offered locally and the chance to speak with employers from the area.
Held on Wednesday (March 1), the sport centre games hall was transformed into a market place, with employers such as Scottish Salmon, Argyll Community Housing Association, Scottish National Heritage, D A MacDonald, Argyll and Bute Council, MacLeod Construction Limited and many more all hosting stalls.
A quiz, made up of questions about the various stalls, was put together to encour- age pupils to speak to employers and find out more information. And S5 and S6 pupils had the opportunity to join in various workshops in the afternoon, including developing their interview skills and CV writing techniques.
Speaking on the day, S6 pupils Milly Rogers, who is uncertain what career path she wants to take, Iona MacNicol, who hopes to become a midwife, and Chelsea Stewart, who thinks she would like to become a teacher, said: ‘Today’s been really helpful. It’s given us a better understanding of what our current qualifications could lead to and what sort of things we might need degrees in.
‘It’s also been really interesting to see what is available in the area and it’s been such a good opportunity, getting to speak to so many different employers and hear what they can offer.’
Younger pupils in S1 and S2 explained that the careers fair was helping them figure out what they might want to do in the future.
One S2 pupil commented: ‘It’s been really helpful speaking to all these employers. I’m thinking about what subjects I want to take next year and it is good to know what sort of qualifications I would need for the jobs I’m interested in.’
Organiser of the event and teacher at Lochgilphead High School, Fiona McBride said: ‘We are overwhelmed by the interest and support from employers, councillors and visiting council staff.
‘It’s been a really educational day for the pupils and it is great to see them getting so much out of it and making them aware of how much is on their doorstep.’
