Charity lesson
KILMARTIN nursery youngsters have been learning about charities after a visit to the Mary’s Meals shop in Lochgilphead.
PUPILS from Kilmartin Nursery visited a Lochgilphead charity shop to find out just how they can help those less fortunate than themselves.
Taking with them items to donate, the youngsters were excited to see how Mary’s Meals runs. Marina Campbell, manager of the Lochgilphead shop, showed the children what happens to the items they donate and explained what the charity does.
After learning all about Mary’s Meals, the youngsters were excited to go shopping themselves, knowing that the money they spent would help feed children less fortunate than themselves around the world.
The nursery pupils have been working on a Helping Others Project and visiting Mary’s Meals was a part of this.
Nursery teacher Rosemary Neagle commented: ‘The children listened really well and we would like to thank Marina for helping with our project. She gave us lots of information about what Mary’s Meals does and told us all about another way we can help others.’
Marina Campbell said: ‘It’s been great having the children visit. They donated lovely items and saw how we process donations.
‘It is great for us to be able to help people understand a bit more about what we do and to teach young people about how people the same age as them might not be as well off and how we can help them.
‘And maybe some of the children who visited today will decide to become volunteers when they’re older.’
As part of the project the youngsters have also given their parents a hand by tidying up around the house and one pupil decided to help his dad with some fishing creels.
The pupils have also helped the wildlife by feeding the birds and cleaning the school pond for the frogs but when this attracted a newt they decided to save some frog spawn and move it to a special pond. They are now keeping a keen eye on the tadpoles, waiting for them to turn into frogs.
