Dominant Red Star sweep aside Broomhill

-

RED STAR welcomed Broomhill to the Lochgilphead Joint Campus on Saturday looking to avenge a 3-1 defeat in January.

And their efforts paid off as the Lochgilphead side ran out comfortable winners.

Star were keen to open the match at a good tempo, but Broomhill had the opening chance when a long ball down the flank caused confusion in the Star defence.

Fortunately for the hosts though, Kalache was well-placed to turn the ball round the post to safety.

Star looked to dominate the midfield, pushing Ciaran McPhie into a central midfield role along with Lee MacLean and Aaron Moore.

Star’s first attempt came from Rab Docherty but his effort was saved well by the advancing keeper who narrowed the angle after Docherty was played through by Ciaran McPhie.

Red Star opened the scoring after 20 minutes. Colin Weir and Lee MacLean combined on the left with a quick throw in before Weir cut the ball back to Kieran Moore who took a touch before fin- ishing past the Broomhill keeper.

Star got a deserved second goal before half time. This time Kieran Moore was taken down in the box after a surging run and the referee pointed to the spot. Rab Docherty stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way for his first goal since his return from a shoulder injury. The first half finished with Red Star 2-0 up.

The second half continued with more of the same as Star continued to knock the ball around with confidence against a tiring Broomhill. The match was all but over after 55 minutes when Lee MacLean slid the ball through to Kieran Moore who beat the offside trap before scoring to put Star 3-0 up.

It was 4-0 soon after when Broomhill failed to clear a cross ball which resulted in the unfortunate defender firing into his own net.

The Star management team used its full squad with Andy Moore, Ali Provan, Ben Forbes and Mark Robertson all coming on for valuable game time.

Red Star now sit fourth in the SAFL Premier 2A, with four games in hand over league leaders Rossvale.

Star take on local rivals Tarbert at home in the Hall Cup first round tomorrow (Saturday March 18). The game kicks off at 2pm at the Ropework although adverse weather could see the tie switched to the Lochgilphead Joint Campus 3G.
