Success for Knapdale beaver project in magazine vote
THE RETURN of the Eurasian beaver has won a public vote to be named Wildlife Success Story of the Year in the 2017 BBC Countryfile magazine awards.
The five-year-long Scottish Beaver Trial - a partnership project between the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the Scottish Wildlife Trust and host Forestry Commission Scotland - was based in Knapdale Forest.
Protected status
In November 2016 Scottish environment minister Roseanna Cunningham announced that beavers would be given protected status and allowed to stay in Scotland.
Susan Davies, director of conservation at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, said: ‘The reintroduction of beavers to our lochs and rivers is a true success story, a milestone for conservation and a huge opportunity for restoring important habitats.
Support
‘I’d like to thank the thousands of people who gave the species their support and helped beavers to win this important award.’
