Youngsters in title nail-biter

-

FOLLOWING their success in the league cup final last week, Lochgilphead Red Star 2004s rounded off their first season in the Dunbartonshire Football Development League with two wins.

On Thursday, the youngsters headed to Helensburgh to take on Ardencaple.

A good defensive performance ensured Red Star kept a clean sheet, and some sharp finishing resulted in a good 4-0 win.

The highlight of the night was Jamie Stewart’s volley for the third goal.

The final league game was a home match against Dumbarton Riverside 2004s on Sunday.

Riverside started strongly but Red Star began to take control and, after a couple of quick goals, they got into their stride and started to pile on the pressure and goals.

In the second half, Riverside pulled back a couple of goals before a superb solo ef- fort by Kieran Caskie saw him run from his own penalty box, beating five or six players, before slotting the ball into the net.

The final score was 9-2 to Red Star.

These two wins leave Red Star with a final tally of 71 points, winning 23 games, drawing two and losing just once out of 26 games and a guaranteed second place.

Challengers

The young Lochgilphead side are now depending on a slip up from league challengers Renton Craigandro to hand them the league title.

Red Star beat the Renton side in the cup final last week, but they currently sit on 70 points with one game still to play.
