Valentine’s Day pancakes for Malawi fundraising
MID ARGYLL Mawali Twinning Group is fundraising to help bring a group of visitors from Mawali to Argyll later this year.
The fundraising initiative is known as ‘PQRST4Malawi’ – and believe it or not, it’s not a spelling mistake.
P is for pancakes, S is for shortbread and T is for tea, all of which will be available at the pancake tea in Lochgilphead Parish Church at 3pm on Wednesday February 14 – Valentine’s Day.
Just before the afternoon tea, the R is for relay event which will see shopkeepers along Argyll Street popping their heads out of their shops to toss a pancake from shop, to butchers to cafe - and back again. Everyone is welcome to witness the event, with the toss beginning at 2.30pm.
Q is for quiz, although it’s more of a treasure hunt. ‘Heart of Malawi’ quiz sheets will have questions, with the answers displayed on shop windows throughout Lochgilphead. Quiz sheets go on sale on Thursday February 1 and are available from: Willie & Pat’s, the Bookshop, Danny’s, the Sweetie Jar and the Salty Dog Cafe.
Complete the quiz sheet and return it to any of the shops listed by 1pm on Valentine’s Day, or bring it along to the pancake tea.
There is a prize of £20 up for grabs, and three runner-up prizes of £5 vouchers for local shops. The winners will be drawn from all correct entries at the close of the pancake tea.
Organiser Ruth Carruthers said: ‘The local traders I’ve spoken with have really embraced the idea of an entertaining and slightly crazy community event, and they’ve been so supportive.
‘We’re loooking for a great turn-out on the day – it’s school holidays, so hopefully families will hunt for the quiz answers together, watch the pancake tossing relay and join us for a heart warming cuppa as we show our heart for Malawi.’
