Newtonmore win Camanachd Cup
Saturday September 15 saw the enthralling final of the Camanachd Cup.
A re-match of the 2017 final, which saw Newtonmore carry home the cup as victors, it was Newtonmore again who secured their third Camanachd Cup on the trot (33 in total) with a hard earned 3 – 0 victory over Lovat.
After a battling start the first chance dropped to Newtonmore with Mike Russell gaining a yard to hit a bullet of a strike towards goal only for the Lovat goalkeeper, Stuart Macdonald to stretch an arm out to tip the ball over the top in a stunning save. This was the first of two stunning first half saves from Macdonald but Newtonmore kept on coming and eventually broke down a stubborn Lovat defence to score not one but three goals before half time with two goals from manof-the-match Evan Menzies and a Glen MacKintosh strike in between.
These are familiar names on the Newtonmore score sheet but many others delivered performances that made it difficult for Lovat including Rory Kennedy, who made a last-ditch tackle early in the second half to prevent Lovat talisman Greg Matheson from getting a shot off just yards from the Newtonmore goal.
In the end Newtonmore were worthy winners with a convincing second-half display that led to captain Andrew Mackintosh being presented the trophy by Tulloch Homes CEO and former Newtonmore player George Fraser
