Probe in Oban as man, 73, is killed

A sus­pect has been charged with the mur­der of a 73-yearold man in Oban, named on Wed­nes­day as Mar­tyn Smith.

Oskars Rancevs ap­peared in Dum­bar­ton Sher­iff Court on Tues­day Oc­to­ber 2 where he made no plea.

The 32-year-old was re­manded in cus­tody and his case has been con­tin­ued for fur­ther ex­am­i­na­tion.

At around 9.40am on Mon­day Oc­to­ber 1, po­lice were called to a re­port of an el­derly man be­ing as­saulted in Columba Court at Dunol­lie. The man was taken to Lorn and Is­lands Hos­pi­tal, where he later died.

Po­lice In­spec­tor Mark Stephen said: ‘I am aware peo­ple in Oban are shocked and con­cerned by what has hap­pened. I would like to re­as­sure peo­ple that this is an iso­lated in­ci­dent and a man has been ar­rested and charged in con­nec­tion with the crime.

‘I can also ad­vise that ad­di­tional of­fi­cers have been de­ployed within the lo­cal com­mu­nity and will be on pa­trol.

‘A post-mortem ex­am­i­na­tion will be car­ried out to es­tab­lish a cause of death.’
