Shanice applies foundation for business success

A Lochgilphead teenager has set up her own make-up business with aspirations to become an international name in the industry.

While living in Glasgow as an eight-year-old, Shanice Honeyman would travel an hour away to visit her makeup artist aunt who inspired her to learn more about the craft.

Now, seven years later and with support from Business Gateway Argyll and Bute, Shanice has launched her own business and is already qualified and insured in make-up artistry.

Shanice’s passion for makeup led her to start home schooling, enrolling on a twoyear online college course for make-up and special effects. The 15-year-old aspires to one day travel the world pursuing a career in bridal make-up, TV, film sets, modelling, and photo shoots.

Shanice said: ‘Almost right away I was very drawn to the make-up. I loved the transformation that took place and I decided I wanted to become a make-up artist and work on TV and film sets.

‘It’s the transformation that you go through to make that person feel more confident and happy. We are beautiful with make-up and without, and I could never enjoy make-up if it was from a point of correction.

‘Business Gateway’s startup advice has given me knowledge and skills needed to increase my week-to-week workload and I now have clients of all ages around Argyll from Lochgilphead, Tarbert, Inveraray, Oban, Glasgow and Ayr.’

Shanice’s unique offering of mobile make-up appointments, one-on-one in-depth teaching sessions, as well as her exclusive premises has helped her business stand out. She also sells handmade luxury Tatti lashes, 3D mink, Brazilian hair and human hair false lashes as part of her business operation.

Now, Shanice plans to expand her business with eyelash extensions, lash lifts, eyebrow shaping and tints, facial and spray tanning.

She added: ‘Being a makeup artist allows me to express what I feel internally to the world. I get to share that excitement with my clients when they see themselves in a different light but they are still themselves.

‘Some have chosen a natural look, others more colourful, celebrity looks, others for concerts and music festivals, so I need to keep on practising and keeping up-to-date with trends. My goal is to build up the business and travel the world specialising in TV, film and modelling.’

Donald Melville of Business Gateway said: ‘Shanice is one of the youngest entrepreneurs we have supported. We helped her get started with advice on banking, keeping records and registering with HM Revenue and Customs, and look forward to seeing her plans develop.’
