Everyone at The Oban Times is proud that so many families still have First World War newspaper cuttings to this day.

Often the newspaper printed off extra copies of the proofs of the stories to give to family members.

When a tailor employed by Chalmers of Oban, James Yuill Turnbull, serving with 3rd Lanark Volunteer Battalion of the Cameronians was posthumously awarded the VC for his actions in securing a machine gun post on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, on July 1, 1916, Authuille, France, copies of the report were also printed on card for distribution.

Each page of The Oban Times is packed full of history and this supplement can only just scratch the surface.

Local war memorials are an instant piece of history.

The Imperial War Museum is compiling the War Memorials Register – the comprehensive national register of UK war memorials and the names of the individuals they commemorate. It currently holds records for over 78,000memorials in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

Many West Highland memorials are listed and you can help complete this important project by volunteering your time.
