Red Star youths in cup thriller

-

After a thrilling game at the Astro, Red Star 2004s departed the Scottish Cup courtesy of a penalty shootout.

In a game that pretty much had everything and kept spectators hooked right to the end, Star just fell short.

Mossend started strongly with an early period of sustained pressure but Star’s defence stood firm. The Lochgilphead boys began to take control and were rewarded with an equaliser when Caskie squeezed the ball over the line from a corner by Aitken. Spurred on by this Star mounted several attacks on the Mossend goal.

A second goal arrived with McMurchy placing the ball calmly past the Mossend keeper courtesy of a fine through pass from Cameron.

This spurred Mossend into a fight back and they clawed their way back into the game pulling back a goal and then a second to bring it to 2-2.

Worse was to follow for Red Star as Mossend then added a third goal to take the lead at half time.

In the second half Star took control and dominated the remainder of the game.

Whilst chances were created they found the Mossend defence difficult to breach. With time running out a great run from Hoad saw him finish with a great strike to beat the Mossend keeper. It was all Star deserved.

Finishing 3-3 the game moved in to 20 minutes of extra time. Star dominated again creating chances but a combination of great defending and bad luck meant no goals were added to leave the game level at 3-3 after 100 minutes.

In the penalty shootout Mossend triumphed 4-3 to move through to round four of the Scottish Cup. A terrific game and great advert for both teams and youth football.
