Head in the sand over A83

-

Sir, Looking at Councillor Paterson’s letter published in last week’s edition of the Argyllshire

Advertiser, it would seem that his head is buried in the sand when it comes to the A83 and the works imposed upon it.

The whole road to Campbeltown is poor to say the least but the Rest and Be Thankful is a disaster area. Does this councillor not realise that the problem should have been sorted, and having even one closure is bad for the local economy? Are we to live with a one-way system over this stretch of road for ever?

We got the cheap option and we are told we should be grateful, it’s a success!

As Donald Clark pointed out in his letter in the same edition, there are better options to improve the situation at the Rest and Be Thankful that would mean we would not be reliant on the old military road, which itself was closed this time. Surprise, surprise we are told the weather in the west of Scotland will be wetter in the future, so it compounds the folly of choosing the option we were given.

The Rest and Be Thankful has been a building site now for several years. How many more years will this situation last? It’s time to plan for a purposeful option for the benefit of Argyll and not to mess around.

Each town and village down the Mid Argyll and Kintyre road is losing out; no wonder people want to leave. Derrick Anstee, director, Inspire Inveraray.
