New year programme at Craignish Village Hall

Some of the best artists from Scotland and the UK continue to bring outstanding performances to the heart of the community

Craignish Village Hall in Ardfern begins a new year with its highly acclaimed arts programme getting into full stride.

A grant from the Creative Scotland Open Project Fund in 2018, together with generous support from the Craignish Trust, has ensured some of the best artists from Scotland and the UK continue to bring outstanding performances to the heart of the community.

In February, there are two special performances to inspire and enjoy, beginning with Within This Dust, a cinematic dance production by Radio 2 Artist in Residence Thomas Small exploring survivors’ accounts of 9/11 and the iconic ‘Falling Man’ series of photographs by Richard Drew. Later in the month, Scottish Opera returns with the ever-popular Opera Highlights quartet programme including extracts from Carmen, La Traviata and Die Fledermaus and works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky.

Looking further ahead, forthcoming events include Heroes, a unique look at the cult of celebrity by aerial dance company All or Nothing, whose work was featured in Bothy Culture and Beyond at the SSE Hydro last year during Celtic Connections.

National treasures of Scottish traditional music Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham bring their instrumental mastery to the hall on May 29 and in June, novelist and playwright Alan Bissett performs The Moira Monologues …a hilarious, but subtly smart work that takes society slowly apart… the Skinny, four stars.

In addition to these and other performances still to be announced, dance artist Rob Heaslip is due to return to the hall early in the year with a residency-based community project The Salt Lab.

For more information about shows and workshops, arts programme manager John Saich can be contacted by email at cvh.artsevents@ gmail.com.

John is keen to hear ideas and suggestions for future events and wants to encourage further community involvement in the ongoing development of the programme.

Within This Dust, suitable for ages 14 and over, takes place on Wednesday February 6, followed by Opera Highlights on Tuesday February 12.

Ticket reservation information can be found on the Craignish Village Hall website: www.craignish.org.uk.
