United Auctions holds Islay lamb and sheep sale

United Auctions sold 5,133 lambs and sheep at the recent sale held at Islay Auction Mart.

The sale, held on Friday October 4, included the annual ram show and sale and the Islay breeding sheep sale.

The ram show was judged by Mr R Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt, Aberdeenshire and his awards were:

Blackface Rams: 1 Robbie Brown, Newton Cottage £600; 2 G Currie, Upper Cragabus £450; 3 Elliot Bowman, Upper Cragabus.

Crossing Rams: 1 Sheena Woodrow, Newmains (Texel Ram Lamb) £400; 2 Morag Grant, Upper Cragabus (Texel Shearling) £350; 3 D Currie Balachlaven (Blueface Shearling) £300.

Show champion: Robbie Brown (Blackface).

Reserve champion: Sheena Woodrow (Texel Ram Lamb).

A good following of buyers ensured all stock was cleared at firm rates.

The lambs which averaged £54.56 per head or 147.2 pence per kilo, however, recorded a drop of £2.81 per head or 13 pence per kilo on the corresponding sale last year.
