Badminton championship success for Campbeltown

-

Badminton players from Campbeltown smashed competition from across the county to scoop every major award at the Argyll and Bute Primary Badminton Championships last Wednesday.

More than 40 players from primary schools in towns across the region, including Oban, Rothesay and Dunoon, travelled to take part in the competition at Lochgilphead Joint Campus on March 11.

It was a very successful day for Dalintober pupil Daniel Graham, who won the boys’ singles, boys’ doubles with his partner Finlay Wilson, and the mixed doubles with Emily McMurchy, both fellow Dalintober pupils.

Argyll has been allocated one entry for the Scottish Schools Competition which will be held in May and it is hoped that Daniel will be able to attend.

The boys’ doubles runners-up were Jake Anderson and Finn McCallum, both from Castlehill, and the mixed doubles runners-up were Jake and his partner Hannah Millar, also from Castlehill.

The girls’ singles was won by Castlehill’s Erin Ralston with Emily runner-up.

Emily and Erin also featured in a very closely fought girls’ doubles final with Emily and partner Hannah emerging as eventual winners, and Erin and Emma Millar – Hannah’s twin sister – as runners-up.

The competition is organised each year by Anne Littleson, the Badminton Scotland area organiser for Argyll and Bute, who was recently crowned Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club of Campbeltown.

This year Anne said she received ‘excellent support’ from Active Schools which helped to run the event on the day. Lindsay Ramsay, Active Schools coordinator South Kintyre, presented the prizes to the competition’s winners.

Ms Littleson said: ‘I would like to congratulate all who participated for the quality of play and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Special mention to the award winners, all of whom were from Kintyre. We would like to wish Daniel well as he represents Dalintober Primary School and the local clubs which he attends at the Scottish finals in Perth in May.’
