Small Isles scoops fifth Eco-Schools flag

-

Primary pupils on Jura are celebrating after their school scooped its fifth Eco-Schools Green Flag.

To earn the award, students at Small Isles Primary School have been following the seven elements of the sustainable schools programme run by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The children took part in a project on reducing food waste, recognising it as a form of litter, and set up recycling stations for various items such as crisp packets and toothbrushes. They also studied the way water goes ‘from the taps to our tummies’, even testing water from taps across Jura.

The award assessor praised the school’s efforts, saying its application was ‘one of the strongest to the programme that they have ever assessed’ and that, as a school community, they have worked hard to ensure that their work has an impact both within the school and also within the local community.

Argyll and Bute Council’s policy lead for education, Councillor Yvonne McNeilly said: ‘What a great achievement. The pupils, staff and parents should be extremely proud of themselves.

‘The Eco Schools programme is a great way to teach children about the importance of looking after the world around them and provides a useful framework for learning, in line with the curriculum of excellence. Well done to everyone at Small Isles Primary School.’

The children have also won parliamentary recognition after Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron submitted a motion praising their achievement.

He said: ‘It is very encouraging to see how our younger generations are taking care of their local environment.

‘Jura is a special place and it is clear from this latest distinction that the island will remain in very good hands for many years to come.’

Councillor Alastair Redman added: ‘The entire community will be very proud of this achievement by its youngest members. Let’s hope they can go on to make it a sixth flag in due course!’
