Despite a lingering chill, spring is definitely here.

This week, though, we feature a memory of winter – a photograph taken during an even colder snap earlier in the year by Dinah Bosomworth of Dalavich. Dinah’s photograph shows hair ice, a feature not commonly seen and made up of ice that forms on dead wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair.

It is believed to be associated with a particular type of fungus ‘Exidiopsis effusa’ in the wood.
