Brodick Castle

Home to formal gardens, woodlands and waterfalls as well as an adventure playground, this baronial castle is packed with treasures and offers spectacula­r views over Brodick Bay and beyond.

Red squirrels

Arran has become one of 19 national stronghold­s for this iconic species, which was introduced to the island (which has no competing greys) a few years ago. Look out for them in conifer woodland and around Brodick Castle.

Goat Fell

Arran’s highest mountain is a highlight of the dramatic landscape that has led to Arran’s title of Scotland in Miniature. The island’s highest point, at 2866ft, it provides panoramic views of the island and out to sea.

Follow in the king’s footsteps

King’s Cave, nestled in sandstone cliffs on Arran’s west coast, is said to be where King Robert the Bruce was famously inspired by the determinat­ion of a spider. At Kingscross Point on Whiting Bay, the king reportedly began the final push of his campaign.

The island’s attractive main settlement hugs its eastern shore and is well equipped with a supermarke­t and leisure facilities which include a golf club, yacht club, bowling club, and a seaside playground.

Glen Sannox Memorial

A memorial in front of Hamilton Terrace in Glen Sannox marks the date in 1829 when 86 local crofters were forced to leave for Canada, because of the Highland Clearances.

Holy Island

Machrie Moor Stone Circles

This collection of six standing stones date back to neolithic times. The moor also features historic standing stones, burial cairns and cists.

Arran Coastal Way

This long-distance walking trail is an ideal way to experience the highlights of Arran’s landscape on foot. The 65-mile circular path is mostly off road and covers landscape from beach, to moors and mountains. Coastalway.co.uk

Taste

Arran Brewery is a micro-brewery on the island’s east coast which offers tours and tastings. The island also boasts a reputation for artisan produce, especially cheese, oatcakes and ice cream. Taste of Arran in Brodick is a showcase for local producers.
