Lorraine MacFarlane has expanded her own business Fresh Connection and the business she shares with her sister, The Treehouse, into new and larger premises. Fresh Connection, florists, was well established before Lorraine took over 16 years ago. Now in new premises on Main Street, Campbeltown, the range has been expanded to include not only flowers, plants and gifts but cards and a café. The workforce includes two trainee florists alongside experienced staff. Lorraine swapped office work for retail and never looked back. Becoming her own boss has enabled her to work around family life and avoid the stress of office life. ‘My advice is to do a lot of market research and listen to your customers.’ ‘You have to look at core products, sold every day as well as seasonal. You also have to believe in what you are going to do and trying to achieve.’ This sees her and team travelling to tradeshows, ordering well in advance. Lorraine says remember to pay attention to the fine details and appearance. ‘Image is important, it helps sell your business. Take pride in it and create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. But be prepared to work hard and put in the hours.’ Treehouse, where sister Julie Eastaugh oversees finance, administration and the website while Lorraine handles the day-today work, has moved into larger premises also on Main Street and expanded its range of gifts and accessories.
