Plants galore at village’s first plant share and picnic

-

Whitehouse residents had a blooming marvellous time at their first community event in more than a year, writes Hannha O’Hanlon.

The village hall committee hosted an outside plant share and picnic recently after a relaxation of Covid-19 rules allowed a gradual move towards more meetings and events.

More than 50 green-fingered people from Lochgilphead to Campbeltown met safely in a pleasant, sunny weather window.

Gardeners who had a surplus from this year’s sowings, cuttings or divisions brought them along to share, while those who hadn’t had much success could benefit.

Herbs

There was a fantastic range of fruit and vegetables, including broccoli, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, gooseberries and aubergines.

Herbs included lemon balm, fennel, oregano and bedding plants such as rudbeckia, pansies and antirrhinums proved popular.

There were even house plants – money plants, geraniums and begonias.

For many people, even though they didn’t actually bring a picnic, it was an opportunity to meet up with friends and neighbours they hadn’t seen for months and a chance to chat with newcomers.

New planters sponsored by Glenbarr Garden Centre, The Garden Shop in Campbeltown and Sloan Builders were also admired.

As an added bonus, nearly £270 was donated to help towards the re-opening.

Grown Whitehouse Village Hall committee looks forward to welcoming everyone back to the village in August for the third annual grow and show event, by which time these embryonic plants will hopefully have grown.
