Rose Marie leads Argyll birthday honours list
A Mid Argyll woman is one of three Argyll and Bute residents recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
Professor Rose Marie Parr has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to pharmacy and pharmaceutical education.
Professor Parr, who lives in Cairnbaan, became chief pharmaceutical officer (CPO) for Scotland in 2015 following periods of service in the NHS and in various Scottish universities.
She was described by former Health Secretary Jeanne Freeman as ‘an exemplary CPO who has provided consistent leadership and made a significant and valuable contribution’.
A delighted Professor Parr said: ‘For me it is all about recognition of the pharmacy profession and the fantastic patient services that both community and hospital pharmacy teams deliver to the people of the communities we serve.
Thank you
‘A huge thank you to all of the pharmacies that have fantastically delivered over the pandemic and saved lives. It’s pharmaceutical care and kindness in our community.’
Receiving MBEs (Member of the Order of the British Empire) are Mr James (Jimmy) Duncan of Bute and Mrs Eleanor MacKay of Innellan. Mr Duncan, a well-known local businessman and musician, receives an MBE for services to the community on Bute during the Covid-19 pandemic.
His garage business maintained provision of essential repair services and fuel supplies to local volunteer groups, helping them to stay mobile and able to deliver essential food and medicine supplies to shielding, elderly and vulnerable people.
Mr Duncan is also known for his charity work and is a stalwart supporter of local causes including Bute Shinty Club and Bute Highland Games.
Eleanor Mackay is the information and local studies librarian for liveArgyll and has been awarded the MBE for services to local studies and the community in Argyll and Bute. Her wealth of local knowledge has been invaluable in a number of projects including the four-year World War I centenary commemorations which culminated in an international remembrance service on Islay in 2018.
Lord Lieutenant of Argyll and Bute Jane MacLeod said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that Argyll and Bute can celebrate three awards in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list.
‘Each recipient can rightly be very proud of their achievements.
‘The OBE and MBE are among the highest awards that people can receive in this way.
‘All three have made tremendous contributions in their respective fields and my sincere congratulations go to Professor Parr, Mr Duncan and Mrs MacKay.’
