Thought for the Week

-

Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:39

We live in times when money, success, beauty and physical condition have become an end in itself; a world where the value of a person is measured by popularity, wealth and extravagance, and celebrity is the way to become someone; where the seeking of sensations gives rise to the next divorce and affair.

What matters is the brand name, which and how many; it can’t be just any. We want the best, the most fashionable and the latest. And when we encounter difficulties, we take offence at God, although in the midst of our daily efforts we’ve completely forgotten about Him.

Suffering, difficulties and diseases have been part of our lives since the beginning. We cannot run away from them.

Properly lived, they can bring us closer to those who love us and to God.

Running away from them into a world of illusions, denial, and dissatisfaction only multiplies the sadness that grows with the next ‘unmet want’.

Following Jesus, you have to rely on His will, and it is not always in line with fashion and global trends. On the contrary, it happens that it is often completely opposed to them, that it requires downgrading success, fashionable clothes and an attractive appearance. And so it requires not pursuing wealth, knowing people will reject, mock and misunderstand you.

So, what’s changed for Christians since the year 1 AD?

Not much. The most important commandment is still: ‘Love the Lord your God...and love your neighbour as yourself.’

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. Psalm 89:15
