And, if you’re looking for some inspiration, here are a few jobs to get on with this month: Cut back roses now – tea roses cut hard back – right to the ground, just above an outward facing bud. Floribunda (those with many blooms on one stem) cut them by half to 2/3rd. Put dahlia and begonia tubers in: In Scotland the season is short, so if you bring on indoors as much as possible, you’ll get a stronger plant for when it goes outside. The same goes for hardy veg – spinach, broccoli, leek, beetroot and peas. As soon as it dries out, dig the beds over – a good rule is, if it’s sticking to your boots it’s too wet – and get the fertiliser in. I like to use a pelleted chicken manure, available instore. Plant bedding dahlias from seed – these attract more insects than any other bedding plant. At the end of summer, you’ll be visited by bees and butterflies. If you’re lucky, they’ll even attract hummingbird moths. Plant fruit trees – apples, plum, pear, sweet cherry. When deciding where to plant, remember that fruit trees will get big, so give them plenty of space and lots of sun. You might even get some fruit this season. Check your lawnmower – is it running properly, does it need a clean? Now’s the time to make sure it is ready to go as soon as the weather gets warmer. One of our favourite things to enjoy in our garden is to keep our wild birds and insects happy, and Harbro offers a huge range of bird feed, feeders and energy balls, as well as bug hotels and insect attracting seeds and plants. In addition to all our gardening offering, Harbro is fully pet friendly. As dog obesity quickly becomes the biggest problems facing our pooches, it’s more important than ever to keep an eye on your dog’s weight. We offer a free dog weighing service to help you keep a close eye on your dog’s weight, and our expert advisors are on hand to offer feeding advice. Now that the days are starting to get longer and warmer, with lots of lovely dog walks on the horizon, ticks can be a real issue, so why not pick up your supply of dog wormers and flea and tick treatments while you are instore? Our horse and pony, farmer and smallholder offering has also been expanded, and our convenient location makes it easy to pop in for whatever you need, from bags of feed to animal health, hardware and workwear. Our new Reward Card has recently been launched, and for Reward Card holders we’ll be offering extra points over the Easter weekend – just sign up next time you are in store to take advantage of these. With plenty of easy parking and a carryto-car service, Harbro Lochgilphead really is the most convenient place to stock up on all your garden (and pet) essentials.
