People from Mid Argyll and Kintyre are helping to bring vital humanitarian aid closer to those in need in Ukraine.

The Mid Argyll Helps Ukraine appeal became an Argyll-wide effort last week as a fresh shipment of humanitarian aid started its journey to those most in need there.

After 13-year-old Jodie Allan had raised a phenomenal £200 – having adopted a vegan diet for a whole month – sponsorship came pouring in; enough to fill two shopping trolleys to the brim at Lochgilphead Co-op, with a long list of essentials from tinned food to baby products and long-life milk.

Amanda Duffy-Brown, appeal co-coordinator, said: ‘Jodie’s food shop will make such a difference to the people of Ukraine.

‘There are many badly affected areas where food supplies are scarce.

‘We have contacts on the ground who will make sure Jodie’s donation reaches the families and groups who need it most.’

Lochgilphead High School pupil Jodie was on holiday in the days before the shipment was due to leave so nominated two people to do the fundraising shop on her behalf.

There was further goodwill from community businesses, with the gift of a box of food from Midton Acrylics.

Then, last Thursday, an AM Transport truck arrived from Campbeltown to transport this and other humanitarian donations to Glasgow, for onward shopping to Eastern Europe this week to the displaced people who need it most, many of whom are now refugees in Poland.

The shipment began its journey to Europe on Monday.

Meanwhile, in Lochgilphead, shop windows have been dressed to thrill this week, with an array of interesting and inspiring displays hoping to impress the Mid Argyll public in the appeal’s shop window competition.
