Welcome back Kintyre Show, we’ve missed you

Pig racing takes centre stage in main show ring

Kintyre Agricultural Society Show is back and everyone can’t wait for the family day out that celebrates all the best about farming and the countryside.

The last show was in 2019 and even though virtual shows were held during the Covid lockdown, nothing compares to the joys of the real show.

‘Entries in the livestock and horse classes are more or less back the same and we are delighted because we feared people might have got out of the habit of showing,’ said show secretary John Armour.

This year will see a new cup presented in the Texel sheep classes. Numbers of entries have been rising steadily for the breed and the society felt the time has come to have both confined and open sections.

The David H McKendrick Cup has been presented by the man who did so much to start and drive forward interest in the breed in Kintyre. David’s son Ian is junior vice president this year.

Another area where the show is growing is the produce tent for home-baking, preserves, flowers and vegetables plus classes for youngsters including miniature gardens, arts and crafts.

John Armour reports a massive increase in the number of schedules requested for these classes. Entries for the produce tent and the dog show can be accepted on the day.

Cups this year will be presented by Mary Turner of Kildalloig Farm.

The committee always strives to find unique entertainment for the main show ring and this year it will be provided by Craigievern Pig Racing.

The show always has a good turn out of trade stalls from local businesses, both from the town and the agricultural sector and charities, not forgetting Kintyre Schools Pipe Band.

There will be plenty of food on sale, so go along hungry.

This year, McFadyens Transport Ltd, which has grown to be one of the UK and Ireland’s leading wind turbine transport specialists, will have a display of their large lorries. This should sit well alongside the Kintyre parade of old tractors, not forgetting the original farm horse power – the magnificent Clydesdales in the show classes.

Show president Malcolm Ronald of Southend and the committee invite you all to come and enjoy yourselves.

Gates open at 8am, the champion of champions will be judged at 2.30pm and the prizegiving will be around 3.30pm.
