Glasgow Mid Argyll 3 Fort William 0

The final relegation spot from the Mowi Premiership was confirmed when Glasgow Mid Argyll beat Fort William 3-0 in their noon throw-up at Peterson Park.

With Kilmallie already relegated, this was second bottom Fort William’s final game of the season. They went into the match two points behind GMA who still had three games to go. However, as well as their two-point lead, GMA also held a plus-21 goal difference advantage over the An Aird side making them favourites to stay up.

GMA were missing the suspended Jonnie MacAskill, his former Kinlochshiel teammates Oliver MacRae and John Don MacKenzie and Brian Slattery.

Keeper Paul MacKay was amongst the Fort William absentees so second team goalie Stuart Disher took his place between the sticks.

GMA settled into the game with two early goals, starting with John McNulty’s 14th minute opener. A free-hit from the halfway line ball dropped to the former Glenorchy player and he fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Three minutes later, Craig Anderson made it 2-0 after he got on the end of a long hit-in and turned the ball low into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Craig Anderson scored his third goal over the last two games to seal victory on 53 minutes. The ball came over to the penalty spot where Anderson, with his back to goal, turned and shot into the bottom corner of Stuart Disher’s goal to make it 3-0.

The win takes GMA above Kyles Athletic, who they meet in their last game of the season on Saturday November 12, on goal difference.

This will also be a final game in charge for Kyles Athletic manager Robert Baxter who has announced his intention to stand down at the end of the season.

Glasgow Mid Argyll play their penultimate game of the campaign this Saturday when they travel to Lovat.

This fixture completed Fort William’s season with their co-managers Victor Smith and Adam Robertson also stepping down, allowing a new management team to regroup in next season’s Mowi National Division.
