Mid Argyll roving players brave wet for love of rugby
Mid Argyll RFC were busy on the field last weekend with a host of teams and players turning out on a wet weekend of west of Scotland weather.
The club’s under-14 girls travelled to Cambuslang on Sunday for a regional event.
Only six of them made the trip and they were playing some very experienced teams.
And while the final scores this weekend didn’t go in Mid Argyll’s favour, the girls played some fantastic rugby and improved on other defensive and communication skills that made them a very difficult team to play against.
The girls can now look forward to a home tournament in Lochgilphead on Sunday November 20.
Elsewhere, youth players provided some county steel in the Oban under-16 ranks through travelling Mid Argyll players Vinnie Buckley, Rhys Coffield and Sorley Self.
The boys took on
Wigtownshire at home in a West League quarter final, and the Oban side ran in five tries plus one conversion from Coffield, which saw Oban win 27-19 in some awful conditions.
They now progress to the semi-final this weekend away to Hamilton.
Drew Buckley was the only senior Mid Argyll player in action over the weekend when she made her debut for Oban Ladies in Oban against Cartha QP 2nd XV.
The game finished 41-13 to the visitors, but it was a great introduction to senior rugby for the young player.
The team’s game is at home this weekend against
Greenock Wanderers. A Mid Argyll RFC spokesperson said: ‘If any girls are interested in taking up rugby, please contact Oban Lorne RFC. The team are always looking for new or experienced players.’
Mid Argyll also played at the Lochaber Festival of Rugby, hosted this time by Lochaber Rugby Club at Banavie as part of the Dalriada series running throughout Argyll and Lochaber throughout the summer and autumn.
Teams from Oban, Mull, Mid Argyll, Connel (Etive Vikings) and Lochaber were in attendance with teams at P4/5 and P6/7 age groups.
In the P4/5 competition, there was a fantastic battle with only points difference separating Mull, Oban and Mid Argyll with each team winning three games and losing one.
Oban came out on top with a try difference of 11 giving them the win, with Mid Argyll in second place with a try difference of five which beat Mull into third place by a single try.
Lochaber came in fourth and the young Etive Vikings team came fifth on the day.
In the P6/7 competition Oban were the runaway winners with a couple of dominant performances leaving them with a try difference of 26 after winning all four games.
Mull edged out Lochaber to take second place with the latter taking third spot in their home competition. Etive Vikings took fourth, with Mid Argyll fifth.
