SHINTY ROUND-UP

-

Oban Celtic 1 Inveraray 4

The visitors took the lead at Mossfield in the first minute through Ewan Donnan, while Neil Campbell and Ruaraidh Graham added two more before the break.

Gabriel Tidser pulled a goal back for Oban, but substitute Allan MacDonald added a fourth for Inveraray.

Andrew Watt was delighted with his side’s opening day victory.

He said: “The players showed great attitude from the first whistle and were dominant for the full first half, playing some excellent shinty with really good movement up front.

“We have a difficult away game next week in Fort William, but the players should take the confidence from today’s performance into next week.” Col-Glen 2 Fort William 3

Fort had a dream start when Graham Campbell scored after only two minutes.

Cluanie Fraser got the Glen back on equal terms with a fine strike, before Victor Smith put Fort ahead, and added another two minutes later from a controversial penalty. Just before the interval a great pass from Sam Bulloch found Andy MacVicar in space. He lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net.

In the second half, Fort’s defence kept Cowal out. . Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 Bute 3 Cailean MacLeod put GMA ahead in 34 minutes at Peterson Park, but Ryan Craig levelled three minutes later.

GMA scored three after the restart through Craig Anderson, Calum Morrison and Calum McLay, before Bute’s Iain McDonald and Scott Harvey (penalty) narrowed the gap.

Kilmory 0 Lochside Rovers 1 Lochside Rovers made a winning start with Lewis

Buchanan’s 35th-minute goal enough to take the win.

Kilmory keeper Steven Gilmour saved from Craig MacMillan and Lewis Buchanan, before stopping Scott MacMillan’s spot-hit with his feet.

Kilmory had the chance to level when they were awarded a penalty for a Logan Black kick inside the box, but the spot-hit was dragged past the post.

Lochside enjoyed most of the second half possession without overly troubling the Kilmory goal. Iain Duffy came off the bench at half-time to make his competitive debut for Lochside and played well, helping the side to victory.

Glasgow Mid Argyll 2 Kyles Athletic 1

Jack Whyte’s early goal put the Kyles Athletic second team ahead against the Glasgow Mid Argyll second team, but a Conal MacDiarmid double earned GMA a 2-1 win.

Oban Celtic 2 Inveraray 7

The Inveraray seconds defeated the Oban Celtic seconds 7-2 in a fixture switched to Ganavan.

Scott Dempster scored both Oban goals in the second half, but Ben Cameron’s hattrick, Lorne Robertson’s own goal and efforts from Ross Anderson, Evan Robertson and Euan Donnan saw Inveraray comfortably through.

Andrew McMurdo had nothing but praise for his side’s emphatic victory.

“I was really pleased with the performance today,” he said, following the game.

“It took us a while to get going, but once we settled we controlled the game.

“Having the goals spread about the team is something we have struggled with in the past few seasons, so to have a few different scorers eases the pressure on the squad.

“As I said to the team afterwards, this is only a start and what really matters is how we respond next week against Tayforth.”

Strachur-Dunoon 2 Tayforth 0 Strachur-Dunoon defeated

Tayforth in a match transferred from Peffermill to Stepps. Cairn Limbert’s penalty and a terrific Ken Lawns goal made the difference.

A club spokesperson said: “It was a great way to commence our 2024 league campaign with a hard-earned victory over a solid Tayforth Camanachd side.”

Glasgow Mid Argyll 6 Aberdour 1

Rebecca Thorington scored for Aberdour but Beth MacLellan’s treble and efforts from Joan Nicolson, Christy Doherty and Ali MacVicar counted for GMA. Dunadd’s first Mowi National Division match was to be against Ardnamurchan at Strontian, but the game was called off following a bereavement.

Inveraray 0

Glasgow Mid Argyll B 6

The newly-formed Inveraray side played their first game, losing to GMA B.

Tarbert AGM

Tarbert Golf Club held its AGM in the clubhouse on Friday February 26, with a great turnout of 26 members in attendance.

With 2023 being a very difficult year, it was hoped that members would turn out in number to show their support and that is exactly what happened.

The main office bearers Eric MacDougall (president) and John MacNab (secretary/treasurer) remained in place to provide both experience and stability for the club.

Andrew Henderson is vice-president.

The new committee was formed without any issues and held their first meeting on Wednesday March 6.

They are keen to see that the clubhouse will be used properly by the members and plan to hold several events over the coming months to boost revenue.

It is also hope that the competitions will be better supported by the members.

The committee have invested in new equipment during the winter months which will be put to good use as the season approaches.
