Mid Argyll Ladies show their mettle
Last Saturday was a momentous day in the history of Mid Argyll RFC as the Ladies’ Development Team travelled to Glasgow to play their first ever game.
The ladies teamed up with Waysiders Drumpellier to take on Strathendrick in a very competitive fixture.
The Mid Argyll team has been training hard for this game in recent weeks and have developed and improved all the skills needed to play a full contact game.
Ten ladies made the trip and they all showed what they are made of with big tackles, strong running and excellent soft skills, passing the ball around like seasoned players.
As a development game, the match was played in three 20-minute sections so the coaches could offer advice and allow the team to restructure.
The first 20 mins were an even contest but Strathendrick led at the interval by five points, a single try from a well-worked move.
The second 20 minutes was a different story. The amalgamated team, who had never met each other before Saturday, came out strong and were now playing some nice rugby.
A scrum near the Strathendrick 5m line allowed scrum half Drew Buckley to play a quick ball to number 8 Grace Drummond, who powered over for Mid Argyll Ladies first ever try. The extra points were added and MA/ WSD were leading 7-5.
Before this period was over, second row Anya Gritten was next to cross the line after some fine play through the forwards, and as the ball was released to Anya, she burst over from 5m out.
No extras this time and as the whistle blew the MA/ WSD team were in the lead 12-5.
The final period was a great contest as both teams went for the win.
By now MA/WSD were playing like a team that had been together all season and were really pushing the opposition.
One more try for the home side from Molly from WSD had the final score at 17-5. Grace Drummond was player of the match with a great try and powerful running.
It was an amazing effort from everyone involved and what a fantastic start and future for Mid Argyll Ladies.
