Kyles Athletic 1 Kinlochshiel 1

Kyles Athletic and Kinlochshiel shared the points following a 1-1 draw at the Playing Field, Tighnabruaich.

Kinlochshiel took the lead on 14 minutes with John MacRae scoring from the edge of the “D”.

Kinlochshiel created more chances in the first half but John Whyte was on top form in the home goal, so the visitors had to settle for a one-goal lead at the break.

Just when it looked as if MacRae’s goal might be enough, the game moved into the final minute and a mis-hit Kinlochshiel free hit in the Kyles half was gathered by the hosts, playing the ball down the wing. When the ball came into the danger area, Kinlochshiel keeper Josh Grant came out to clear, but the ball fell for Luke Thornton who stroked it into the net.

Kyles Athletic player/ coach Roddy Macdonald said: “That was really tough. Conditions were difficult with a soft pitch and constant rain. Kinlochshiel dominated the first half and our keeper John Whyte was excellent. We came more into it with the wind in the second half and never gave up which was pleasing as that’s something we constantly drum into the boys. It’s a good point.”

Col-Glen 4

Kilmallie 2

Col-Glen notched up their first league win of the season when they beat Kilmallie 4-2 at Glendaruel.

At home in the Clachan, Kilmallie struck first through Shane O’Rua on 24 minutes but Sam Bulloch claimed his first goal since joining the side from Strachur-Dunoon on 39 minutes. Auryn Kerr put ColGlen ahead with five first half minutes remaining.

Kilmallie’s Innes Blackhall moved up the field in the second half and caused all sorts of problems for the Glen’s defence as he equalised on 60 minutes, but it was another rapid brace of goals from Andrew MacVicar on 77 minutes and another from Sam Bulloch on 83 minutes that sealed the win for the Glen. This was a gutsy two points and a fantastic team effort for Col-Glen, where keeper Scott Symons picked up man of the match.

Col-Glen Shinty Club are very grateful to Crossroads Pet & Garden for sponsoring the match. Col-Glen are away to Inveraray next week.

Inveraray 1

Beauly 3

League leaders Beauly made it three wins out of three with a 3-1 victory over Inveraray at the Winterton.

Beauly led through Jack MacDonald on 26 minutes, but Fraser Watt pulled Inveraray level five minutes before the break. Beauly regained the lead on 65 minutes and Euan McCormick sealed the 3-1 win five minutes later.

Inveraray manager Andrew Watt said: “I really feel for the boys as that’s two consecutive weeks now where they have given everything and come out on the wrong side of the result.

“Beauly are a strong team, and you can see their Premiership experience, however, we dominated large spells of the game, particularly the first 20 minutes of the second half. If the boys continue to put the same effort into games, we will start picking up results.

“We’re looking forward to a run of home games over the next few weeks.”

Kilmory had a convincing 7 -1 away win at Ardnamurchan at the weekend in the South League.

Things didn’t look good for the Mid Argyll team at half time being one goal down, with the forwards misfiring and the defence looking shaky.

However, the team showed a bit of character in the second half and produced a polished performance of great attacking shinty.

Inveraray gave it their all, but came out on the wrong side of the result.

Nairn Jackson levelled a minute after the restart. Doubles from both Craig Taylor and Euan Gilmour as well as efforts from Sandy Leiper and Bruce Johnstone sent Kilmory out of sight. Kilmory can now look forward to next Saturday’s home game against Aberdour with renewed confidence.

Big thanks to Ardnamurchan for game and after-match hospitality.

Aberdour 2nds 1 Strachur-Dunoon 1

The Aberdour seconds and Strachur-Dunoon drew 1-1 in their noon throw-up at Silversands.

The home side were mostly on top during the first 45 on Saturday, with a Ciaran Burns strike on 20 minutes giving ‘Dour a one-goal lead heading into the break.

However, Strachur-Dunoon upped their game after the restart, playing some good shinty, which put the home side on the back foot.

In his third game this season, Cairn Limbert bagged his third goal for the club with 15 minutes left to play.

Strachur-Dunoon desperately looked for a late winner, which looked almost certain when William McGladdery’s left-sided effort went inches over the bar with hardly any time remaining.

Despite not taking both points back home, the boys will be pleased with their improved second-half performance whilst continuing their unbeaten start to the league season despite not playing at home so far.

Similar to last week, captain Ollie Adrian picked up the team’s man of the match for his performance in the back line. Ollie is kindly sponsored by Benmore Farm Holiday Cottages, a beautiful barn conversation set within the grounds of a working Cowal farm. Other sponsors include Benmore Farm Cottages and WEF Floor Coverings.

Inveraray Juniors 5 Uddingston 1

The Inveraray juniors won 5-1 against Uddingston at Stepps Playing Fields.

Ally MacLennan scored for Uddingston, but Bryce Griffin, Evan Robertson, Zander Kilmurray, Findlay Mustarde and Ruaraidh Graham senior gave Inveraray victory.

Andrew McMurdo sees the young side growing in stature and maturity each week.

He said: “Overall I was delighted to come away with full points again. The team is improving week on week and to test ourselves against an ever-improving Uddingston side and control the game for the most part is showing signs of their maturity.

“The first half was a bit scrappy but once the defence improved, we controlled the play. Again we spread the goals about and utilised our squad depth. Next week we play Strachur and will need to maintain our focus and work ethic to be successful.”

Winter league finishes on a high

The second round of the Lochgilphead Golf Club winter league finals saw Tom Campbell and Andy Law tie on 33 points, with Davie Philips one shot back from his first round.

Keith Cowan gambled by missing out round two, but “knows what to throw away and knows what to keep” as he had the singles and doubles match play trophies already won.

In the top six leader, Iain MacInnes, Eddie Shaw and Iain Mcglynn added 35 to their totals, closely followed by Ross Sinclair, Donald Carmichael and doubles winner Chris Macintosh. Eddie won the sweep and captain Iain the nearest the pin at the 7th. The accountant took the cash at the 9th with no winner.

Saturday’s final round dawned frosty and sunny, with the course well prepared by Davie and Donald.

Douglas Whyte opened the bar and Raymond “Ramsay” Flannigan took charge of the food.

Tom Campbell rose to the occasion and won the Duffers Derby by six shots from Andy Law. Keith and Davie tied for third place.

Championship winner 23/24, Captain Iain MacInnes finished with a two-round best of 86 points. The sweep and nearest the 9th pin prizes were also his.

Ross finished runner-up. He was the league champion and his nearest the 7th pin prize would soften the loss a fraction.

Eddie, Donald, Iain and Chris had 72, 70, 68 and 66 respectively.

Prizes and trophies awarded, a scrumptious buffet and drinks were enjoyed and October 13 was agreed as the start of all the shenanigans for 24/25.

Enjoy the summer months.
