-

The Oban area Macaulay Association Winter Series finished on Sunday March 17, writes Fiona Scott.

Shinty teams from Mull, Oban and Mid Argyll attended the five monthly events which started last October.

There were 21 teams in attendance for the final event from schools including Rockfield Primary School; Park Primary School; St Columba’s Primary School; Taynuilt Primary School; Bunessan Primary School, Mull; Kilmory and Kilmartin/ Craignish. Inveraray who have been regular competitors were unable to make the final event.

The event was split into two age categories with a Primary 5 and Under section and a Primary 6/7 competition.

There were 15 entries in the younger session with the children playing some close six-minute games. A strong Rockfield Blues side came out on top accumulating an impressive points total over the five events. Kilmory narrowly edged out Park Primary School for second position.

The Primary 6/7 competition had six teams playing on the final day - three teams from Rockfield, Kilmory and two St Columba’s teams. Again, Rockfield Blues were the winners. Kilmory finished second, narrowly beating St Columba’s.

All the children received medals from David Thompson and David Hamilton from the Macaulay Association which sponsored this event.

Will Cowie from the Camanachd Association said: “It is tremendous to see so many young players attending these events. Thanks go to the schools, parents, coaches and volunteers who made this event such a success.

“You can see the improvement in the youngsters at every event which is testament to the hard work going on in the background from these coaches and volunteers.

“Thanks to the Macaulay Association for sponsoring this series. Without its support this couldn’t have happened.

“The future is bright for Oban shinty with the support this series has received.

“The Winter Series has proved to be a massive success for primary shinty in and around Oban. It is great having traditionally talented shinty schools in Taynuilt, Park and St Columba’s back playing again and having multiple teams out. The momentum that has been gathered with this youth shinty series will hopefully continue into the summer outdoor season.”
