Storm Kathleen fails to blow over Lochgilphead bowlers
While other Mid Argyll bowling clubs postponed the start to the outdoor season, Lochgilphead Bowling Club’s hardy members braved Storm Kathleen on Saturday April 6 to take part in their club’s official seasonal opening.
President Colin MacInnes thanked everyone for attending and welcomed everyone back to the green after a winter of carpet bowls which ended last month.
A new memorial bench to Jim Young is now situated in front of the clubhouse and thanks were expressed to the Young family for it.
In recognition and appreciation of their tireless work, the club presented honorary memberships to Bob Martin, Hamish MacNeil and Ian Guy. Thanks were also given to all those offering help with the catering, in the organisation, upkeep and running of the club.
Colin then invited his daughter Mhairi MacInnes to throw the first jack of the season.
Some fun then ensued with the president’s and vice president’s teams, under the leadership of Colin and Liz Johnson respectively, taking each other on in a less than serious game of bowls as getting anywhere near the jack was a tough ask given the conditions.
At the end of the day the president’s team won by four shots. All retired to the clubhouse for some yummy scones and cake.
The club will hold a comeand-try bowls on Saturday April 27.
Anyone wishing to have a go at the sport are more than welcome. (Please note that due to the nature of the game children must be aged 10-plus and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.)
The club “wappenshaws” will be held every Tuesday at 6.30pm and Thursday at 2pm. Members of the public are welcome to come along to these games and have a try at lawn bowls.
