Local musicians capture Ardrishaig audience
Mid Argyll Arts Association (MAAA) presented a memorable evening of music to a near capacity and delighted audience on Saturday April 20 in Ardrishaig Public Hall, writes Jean Boardman.
The concert was performed by talented local musicians Philip Bowden Smith, piano, and Kathleen Morrison, soprano, who was expertly and sensitively accompanied by John Marsden on piano.
Following MAAA’s successful 40th concert season, this extra concert was the idea of Mr Bowden Smith, who was inspired by the concept of a Schubertiade, which is an informal concert hosted in someone’s home or other intimate venue.
The concert reverently featured a number of Schubert’s works: spirited and joyful performances of the piano pieces Sonata in G, Impromptu No.3 and Four Impromptus Opus 90; and five of the ever popular Lieder, beautifully sung, including a heart-stopping interpretation of the lovely Du Bist die Ruh (You are Rest and Peace).
Also included in the programme were a delightful and moving rendition of one of Debussy’s Nocturnes for piano and sensitively-interpreted and soul-searching performances of two Art Songs by Fauré.
It was inspiring to have such wonderful local talent showcased and the thoroughly enjoyable concert was delightfully brought to a close with an exuberant and fun arrangement of God Save the King for six hands at the piano, played by all three of our musicians to hearty applause.
MAAA receives support from Chamber Music Scotland, with funding provided by Creative Scotland.
