Artemis Macaulay Cup – first round

Inveraray 4 Glasgow Mid Argyll 4 (After extra-time: GMA won 4-3 on penalties)

Glasgow Mid Argyll won through to the next round of the Artemis Macaulay Cup following a penalty shoot-out after their 4-4 draw against Inveraray in their 3pm throw up at the Winterton.

GMA led after just 10 minutes with Finlay MacMillan scoring but Inveraray built up a 3-1 interval lead through Fraser Watt on 22 minutes and Campbell Watt’s brace on 25 and 37 minutes.

Calum Morrison cut the deficit five minutes into the second half and the returning Garry Luke tied the contest at 3-3 on 69 minutes.

GMA took an extra-time lead through Craig Anderson on 102 minutes only for Fraser Watt to get his second at the death, so referee Alec

MacVicar took the tie to a penalty shoot-out which GMA won 4-3.

Inveraray’s manager Andrew Watt said: “I’m so proud of the boys today, the effort and attitude they showed against a very good GMA team - who showed their premier league quality today.

“After losing the opening goal on 10 minutes, I thought the team’s reaction was superb for the remainder of the first half and we scored three good goals which we deserved based on how the team performed in that part of the game.

“We struggled to get going at the start of the second half and didn’t really put GMA under the same pressure we did in the first half and GMA got themselves level with the pressure they created.

“The boys showed incredible character and spirit to keep going in extra time after going behind and they should be proud of the fact they kept fighting to the last seconds of the game to take the tie to penalties.

“The players are obviously disappointed to lose on penalties but it really is fine margins and it comes down to a matter of inches whether you win or lose, unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day. Today’s game should absolutely be the benchmark for the rest of the season in terms of performance, fitness and attitude.”

Col-Glen 2 Kyles Athletic 4 Premier league side Kyles Athletic eventually won 4-2 against Col-Glen in their derby at Glendaruel.

Kyles led through James Pringle after three minutes but Sam Bulloch levelled by visiting stand-in keeper Innes Macdonald on nine minutes.

The home side hit the front through Sam Bulloch again on 41 minutes but a second from James Pringle a minute later made it 2-2 at the break.

An unfortunate Kyle Kerr own goal put Kyles back in front a minute into the second half and Roddy Macdonald made it 4-2 a couple of minutes after the hour.

Kyles will be concerned by a hamstring injury suffered by Andrew King.

A spokesperson for Col-Glen said: “It was great to see so many people from the district and beyond down at the Clachan for what was a great day of shinty. Best of luck to Kyles in the next round.”
