IN THE BLACK FANTASTIC
19 June to 18 September
Fantastical imagery in art does not always signify escapism. Take this upcoming exhibition, for example, which will show how artworks by black artists use the fantastic to confront socially constructed ideas about race. Work will feature from the likes of distinguished American sculptor Nick Cave, Turner Prize winner Chris O li, whose paintings transport the texts of Homer to the Caribbean, and Lina Iris Viktor – a mixed media artist who re-imagines herself as characters from European portraiture, West African textiles and classical mythology in works such as Eleventh [above].
