He was a master draughtsman
He makes it look so easy, doesn’t he? Many critics have suggested that Raphael was an even better draughtsman than he was brilliant painter. The lightness of touch and sense of movement speak to a talent which manages to be both raw and elegant. His paintings were carefully considered, meticulously planned and, in the later stages of his career, contributed to by apprentices. But Raphael’s drawings were always his own and boasted his aptitude for the immediacy and expressiveness that the medium calls for. While in many cases his drawings were studies or moments of planning, they always convey emotion, movement and tension.
