PICASSO INGRES: FACE TO FACE

- The National Gallery, London. nationalgallery.org.uk

Until 9 October

Pablo Picasso once said, “Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal.” It’s a quote that perfectly sums up this unique chance to see the Spanish painter’s Woman with a Book alongside the 19th Century work that inspired it – Madame Moitessier by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. After seeing the portrait in Paris in 1921, Picasso would repeatedly reference Ingres in his art, with this get-together of two great works helping to trace the continuous thread of artistic development between the two centuries.
