Experiment with various media to nd your perfect painting style.

In this mini tutorial, we’ll look at some techniques for drawing various foliage types, such as trees and leaves that you can use when drawing outside on your tablet.

When drawing from life, you don’t have to make everything detailed. Add details mainly on the areas you want to focus on. Usually, the focus is located in the foreground or middle ground, but never in the far background.

DRAWING TREES

1 First, sketch out the main forms of the tree.

2 Paint the clusters of foliage with a large brush.

3 Start adding shape with highlights and shadows, still with a large brush.

4 With a small brush, paint in details like leaves. In this example, we added some gaps between leaf clusters too.

DRAWING LEAVES

Objects in the foreground should be painted in more detail, so sometimes the leaves in the foreground need to be drawn individually. To draw individual leaves, start with a centre line of action. Di”fferent plants have di”fferent patterns and structures. Below are some examples of where to nd these lines. With these lines it is easier to distinguish the upper und under side of the leaves when thinking of them in 3D space. Different leaves have different kinds of shapes, but they usually have a central line just like the spine of the human figure. This line can be used as a line of action to draw a leaf. Above are some leaves in different angles and poses that can be drawn from just one similar central line.
