FOCUSING IN

All paintings are a balancing act between abstraction and representation. As the focal point of the picture, I wanted the boat to have some more areas of sharp detail and be more ‘realistic’. Hopefully this would allow other elements in the painting to be kept as abstract and sketchy as possible while still being convincing. The boat was built up in the same way, with a combination of dabs of colour and carefully placed sharp lines. The people and tiny details in the boat help give a sense of distance and overall scale to the picture. ▸
