Special birthday at our barbecue

-

Ashbourne Branch of Parkinson’s UK

OUR annual barbecue was held on August 16 at Clifton Village Hall, and Nigel the butcher prepared a most appetising menu of lamb, beef, pork and delicious sausages and beef burgers.

One of our members was celebrating a very special birthday that day, so after the strawberries and cream the birthday cake was cut, glasses were charged with bubbly for the toast to the birthday girl.

It was so good to have so many of our members and helpers there, and especially we were pleased to have Rose after spells in and out of hospital after falling and breaking a hip on Christmas Day.

Faith had only recently been discharged from hospital after surgery for a broken hip – both looking well and enjoying the day.

Today will be our last visit to Cycle Derby for this year – many of our members and helpers have enjoyed using the specially made and adapted machines to suit every need.

We are looking forward to welcoming Kaye and John, t’ai chi instructors, to our September meeting, and to benefit from participating in the gentle exercises they will be demonstrating.

T’ai chi has proved beneficial for those with Parkinson’s disease, and helps with balance and has a calming quality which is good for all who participate.

A number of our members attend the t’ai chi classes held at The Hub on the Ashbourne Industrial Estate off Derby Road.

A reminder that our branch meeting on October 18 will take place in St Oswald’s Church Hall, when our friends, the ‘Movers and Shakers’ from the Derby Branch of Parkinson’s UK will be coming with Lester Simpson, who will lead us in singing together in a great medley of songs old and not so old.

Many of Ashbourne branch’s members have joined them at their HQ in Chester Green to sing with them and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit, and learned a few more songs.

Our Christmas meal is booked once again at Denstone Farm Shop for Thursday, December 14.

We are a caring and active group of people who meet on the third Thursday of the month at Town Head, on Cokayne Avenue 2pm to 4pm.

We are welcomed with tea, coffee and biscuits, for which we contribute one pound. We have very interesting speakers.

We take a raffle prize, and support the Ashbourne Food Bank.

A number of us meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at the Cornerstone Cafe on Church Street – all are welcome to join us there for chat friendship from 10.30am.
